You’ll typically hear Detroit nicknamed “The Motor City” for being the American headquarters of auto giants like General Motors. But before it was paved with highways, Detroit was fancied as a strategic port to control ships and commerce on the Great Lakes. In fact, there are three world emblems on the Detroit city flag: France, England, and the United States. The city has been ruled by all three since first being settled by Europeans near the turn of the 18th century.

Detroit is a city rich with history and cultural institutions, and Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Detroit Warren is conveniently located in a suburb near downtown but just removed enough if you want to have a quiet night in.

As you walk in the lobby, you’ll find a fireplace amid Bavarian-styled decor. Located in southern Michigan, Detroit is close to Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, and right below massive Lake Huron. Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Detroit Warren is located in a quiet suburb about 15 minutes away from downtown.

Detroit’s downtown has some excellent museums. One of these is the Detroit Institute of Arts, a 658,000-square-foot art museum considered to be one of the finest of its kind in the country. Among its vast collection: a dragon tile relief from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh.

The Motown Museum is in the same house where legends such as Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, and the Jackson 5 recorded some of their most classic songs. In one of the studios, you can see a giant divot in the wooden floor where producers and sound technicians tapped their foot to the beat of the songs as they were recorded.

Greektown, which is northeast of downtown, is a quirky neighborhood that has stuck to its immigrant roots. Monroe Street in particular is lined with buildings made to resemble the Parthenon and Pegasus, and Greek music plays outdoors next to themed eateries.
